Cedar Valley Waldorf School provides a holistic education that addresses the spiritual, emotional, intellectual and physical aspects of the child. The school develops confident, independent thinkers who have a strong social and environmental conscience and who respond to the world with compassion and creativity. The school community honours the child, fosters harmonious relationships and celebrates the wonder of life.
Cedar Valley Waldorf School is located at 38265 Westway Avenue in Valleycliffe. Housed in a converted church, the school is bordered by forest and stream, providing access to nature for all of our students. CVWS offers parent and child classes (18 months and up), preschool and childcare for children aged 3- 5, full and half day kindergarten and Grades 1-8. The school is a certified Independent School under the BC Ministry of Education and a developing Waldorf school under the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America.
The aim of Waldorf Education is to educate the whole child: head (thinking), heart (feeling) and hands (doing). Our curriculum meets or exceeds all the Ministry of Education standards and balances academic subjects with artistic and practical activities. By freely using arts, crafts, music and movement in the service of teaching academics the child develops an internal motivation to learn.
The early childhood programs at Cedar Valley Waldorf School foster the natural curiosity and wonder of a young child in a beautiful and stimulating environment. Enveloped in a warm, comfortable and loving atmosphere children are able to develop self-confidence, learn social skills and enhance their creative thinking.
In addition to a strong academic program, the grades curriculum includes French and German languages, outdoor education, music and orchestra, handwork, and practical arts. CVWS graduating classes have gone on with success to local secondary schools, capturing awards for academic achievement in languages, computer science and other subjects. A significant portion of our graduates achieved the principal’s list and the honour roll.
Our teachers are Ministry of Education certified and dedicated to creating a genuine love of learning within each child. Our school strives to awaken capacities rather than to impose intellectual content on the child. In this way learning becomes an engaging voyage of discovery both of the world and of oneself. “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” -William Butler Yeats
The life of the school extends beyond the classroom in programs and events that support the whole community. Each year, CVWS offers community parenting series on topics such as child development, discipline and play. CVWS is present at the Squamish Farmer’s Market and Brackendale Fall Fair. Our students participate in Squamish Heritage Days, and offer concerts and plays to local seniors communities. Additionally, community festivals such as the Christmas and May Fairs offer a cultural counterpoint to the rhythms of nature.
