Become a Volunteer Firefighter
As is common with many smaller communities in Canada, the District of Squamish augments its full time complement of firefighters with volunteer firefighters from the community. These dedicated individuals respond from home or work to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
We take pride in training our volunteer firefighters to the British Columbia Firefighter Standard as administered by the Justice Institute of British Columbia.
Squamish currently maintains a complement of approximately 60 volunteers. Recruit firefighter classes are held whenever attrition in current personnel makes hiring necessary - generally every two years. Persons interested in becoming volunteer firefighters are required to live in Squamish, be able to dedicate several weekends to the initial recruit classes and 2 hours / week time for Monday night training after probation. Candidates should be in good physical condition and be generally healthy, without any physical or mental impediments to performing typical fire ground tasks. These tasks may include but are not limited to wearing an air mask, climbing ladders, lifting heavy objects, driving and operation of apparatus, use of a variety of hand tools and firefighting appliances.
A physical fitness examination and interview process will be performed on all candidates. A driver's abstract and criminal record check is required of all candidates.
