A Message from the Mayor
Welcome to the District of Squamish, the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada!
I am proud to welcome you to the District of Squamish website where you will find a wealth of information about our community. Whether you’re a resident, business owner, visitor or considering a move here, this web site will provide you with the information you need about our town and the many services offered through the District of Squamish.
This website is also designed to celebrate our incredible corner of the world, and showcase why residents love to live, learn, work and play here. We are called the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada for good reason. Our unequaled location is at the head of a glacially etched fjord on the Pacific Ocean, at the base of the second largest granite monolith in the world, in the middle of a beautiful temperate rainforest and at the confluence of multiple salmon bearing rivers. We also happen to be located half way between one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Vancouver, and the number one ski resort in North America, Whistler. We’re also a convenient base for the magnificent Callaghan Valley nordic sports facility, Whistler Olympic Park.
Our heritage is also extremely rich. We are located in the traditional territory of the Coast Salish Peoples of the Squamish Nation. Later European settlers pioneered endeavors such as agriculture, forestry, mining, and tourism. More recently, we have welcomed people from all over the world including a very active Indo-Canadian community.
This marriage of an unsurpassed location and industrious people has produced a community teeming with activity. Our spirit of volunteerism is strong, and has been integral in accomplishing great things such as the creation of a golf course, world class mountain bike trails, rock climbing parks, an airport, hospital, a variety of festivals and celebrated annual events and much more. Our baseball, soccer fields and ice rink are in constant demand; the Squamish Minor Soccer Association alone coordinates a league of over 800 young people. Our location is also an inspiration for the second largest per capita population of artists in Canada.
Squamish is a town that celebrates innovation, diversity and welcomes economic development. We are a passionate group of individuals who strive to make the most out of life while being thoughtful and responsible stewards of our environment.
I invite you to fully explore our website, and follow the links to discover the many incredible attractions, clubs, associations, schools, activities and interests that make Squamish unique. On behalf of the District of Squamish, I also extend a warm welcome for you to contact us by email, telephone or in person, if we can be of any further assistance.
