Flood alert issued for Paradise Valley

December 10, 2014, 4:23 p.m. - The District of Squamish has received the following Flood Alert from BC Hydro:

Local inflows to the Cheakamus River have increased substantially over the past 12 hours. BC Hydro has reduced the spill from the Cheakamus Dam to maintain the river below bankfull. However, the Daisy Lake elevation is rising and BC Hydro is forecasting continued high inflows to the reservoir. It is necessary to increase the spill from the dam to control the reservoir elevation. If the local inflows to the Cheakamus River do not subside, the river may rise above bankfull. (The term bankfull refers to the water level stage that just begins to spill out of the channel).

Some localized flooding may be possible within the next 24 hrs.

For more information, the public can call the BC Hydro Water Level Centre Hotline at 604.892.6520.

The District of Squamish continues to monitor the situation and liaise with BC Hydro, taking any measures necessary. We will continue to post new information as it becomes available.
