Flood warning issued for Sea to Sky Corridor

The BC River Forecast Centre issued a flood warning this evening for the Sea-to-Sky Corridor and Squamish River.

District of Squamish crews have been monitoring the situation throughout the day today and checking on the three pump stations at Harris Slough, Dryden Creek and Judd Slough. The automated pumps have been running and crews are monitoring them to ensure they are functioning properly and are cleared of debris. It is expected that water levels will peak shortly, and the weather forecast is indicating that we'll see drier conditions overnight and tomorrow.

The flood warning text is included below:

Flood Warning: Sea to Sky Corridor
Updated: 20 September 2015 7:00 PM

The BC River Forecast Centre is issuing a Flood Warning for:

*         Sea to Sky Corridor including the Lillooet River and surrounding streams

*         Squamish River

Streamflows on the Lillooet River near Pemberton (WSC 08MG005) are at 1107 m3/s. This flow rate is just above the 20-year return period flow. Water levels increased at approximately 16 cm/hr this afternoon.

Streamflows on the Squamish River near Brackendale (WSC 08GA022) are at 1790 m3/s. This flow rate exceeds the 5-year return period flow. Water levels increased at approximately 15 cm/hr this afternoon.

Flows increased rapidly today due to high intensity rainfall concentrated in the region. Rainfall is expected to taper Sunday evening, but flows are likely to remain high tonight.
The BC River Forecast Centre is maintaining a High Streamflow Advisory:

*         North Shore (Seymour, Lynn, Capilano, Coquitlam and surrounding small streams)

*         Howe Sound

Streams are likely to begin to recede by Monday morning. The public is cautioned to stay clear of streams due to quickly flowing water and unstable riverbanks.

The River Forecast Centre will continue to monitor conditions and will provide updates as conditions warrant.
