Operational update - Snow, snow, snow!

December 11, 10 a.m. - District of Squamish Operations crews have been kept busy over the last 48 hours with the heavy, continuous snowfall that has blanketed the community, much to the delight of youngsters and the young at heart throughout the town!

Crews are continuously plowing the "red" priority routes to ensure emergency vehicles and buses have access to the main collector routes. Crews are then widening back the snow to the ditch lines and/or storm drains to ensure that, once the snow has melted, it will flow into our storm system rather than flood the streets. Once the red routes are widened back, work will progress on the secondary streets. Please help crews by keeping parked vehicles off the street wherever possible. Parked vehicles are dangerous to snowplow drivers and will slow down service causing delays in clearing routes.

Crews are also continuously shovelling Downtown sidewalk letdowns, as well as the overpasses. Once this is complete, they will move onto sidewalks in front of District of Squamish property and bus shelters.

Duty to Clear Ice and Snow

The Traffic Bylaw requires owners and occupiers of property to clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property. "Duty to clear ice and snow" is outlined in section 4.12 of the bylaw, as per below. The District clears sidewalks adjacent to municipal and vacant Crown property.

4.12 Where ice or snow has accumulated on a sidewalk or foot path on or adjacent to real property used for residential or business purposes, the owner, occupier, strata-corporation or other person responsible for that real property must ensure that:

(a) any ice on the sidewalk or footpath is promptly removed or treated with sand, rock salt or other material designed to reduce the risk of injury caused by slipping or falling;

(b) an accumulation of snow is promptly cleared so as to allow the safe and convenient use of the sidewalk or footpath by pedestrians; and

(c) any snow ploughed, shovelled or cleared on or from real property must not be deposited on any highway.

Visit our Snow and Ice Control page for additional information on road clearing priorities.

Thank you for your patience!
