Public invited to tour Operations Yard during Public Works Week 2015

The District of Squamish will open up its Operations Yard to the public next week during the 55th annual National Public Works Week (NPWW). The public are invited for guided tours of the Operations Yard on Thursday, May 21 between 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Operations staff will showcase the various aspects of their work including the Waste Water Treatment Plant, the District’s water and sewer system monitoring system, the fleet of heavy equipment, trucks and vehicles, and much more.

The District joins other provinces and municipalities across Canada in celebrating the 55th annual NPWW, and has proclaimed May 17 to 23, 2015 Public Works Week. The theme for 2015 is “Community begins here”.

“Public Works Week is a great opportunity to focus the spotlight on the dedicated employees who work day in and day out to deliver important services to our community,” says Mayor Patricia Heintzman, District of Squamish. “We all take for granted that we can turn on the tap to access drinking water, that our toilets will flush, or that our storm sewers will function properly. Learning more about the efforts it takes to actually deliver these services is eye opening and I encourage everyone to take this opportunity to discover how our community functions.”

Again this year, the District of Squamish will host grade four students from across Squamish during the morning of May 21, also at the Public Works Yard. The highly popular school tour is planned from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Over 200 grade four students from local elementary schools will learn about all aspects of public works. Their tour will take them through 12 interactive stations exploring everything from how to make a hanging flower basket, to a tour of the wastewater treatment plant, to learning about water conservation, to getting up close and personal with the heavy equipment fleet. The District will also utilize this program to communicate public works as a viable career choice for the working force of the future.
