Sanitary Sewer Vapour Testing

The District of Squamish has hired Dougness Holdings to conduct a vapour testing survey of the sanitary sewers in Lower Hospital Hill, Valleycliffe and Stawamus Reserve. Work will take place Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. until February 17 (weather permitting).

Vapour testing is used to identify possible storm drains cross connected to the sanitary system or breaks in the sewer that allow stormwater or groundwater to enter the sanitary system. It also helps to identify sources of excess flows in the sewer.

You may see vapour that looks like smoke coming from roof vents of houses or seeping up from the ground. This vapour is safe, NON-TOXIC, odourless and creates no fire hazard. Vapour should not enter your home unless there is a dry “P trap”. A dry “P trap” can occur in sinks or toilets that are seldom used and can be corrected by running a few cups of water through it.

Hand-delivered notices will be provided 48 hours prior to vapour testing on your street. You do not need to be at home while this work is being done. However, if you are at home and vapour enters your house, please contact the  nearby field crew at 604.826.7297 or call the District’s Capital Projects Manager, Matt Simmons at 604.815.5000 and the crew will be notified.
