Squamish is home to North America’s largest gathering of Bald Eagles. Drawn by spawning salmon in the Squamish and Cheakamus Rivers, bald eagles start arriving as early as November and stay as late as March, with their population peaking during December and January. The 755 hectare Brackendale Eagles Park Reserve, on the west side of the Squamish River, was established in 1996 to protect their habitat.
The primary viewing area is Eagle Run Park located on Government Road in Brackendale. This accessible park is located on the Squamish River dyke and features an information kiosk and telescopes. Learn more about eagle viewing from Tourism Squamish.
Squamish’s ocean, rivers, and estuary provide prime habitat for 200 migratory species making Squamish a prime destination for birdwatchers.
