Squamish is a world renowned windsurfing and kiteboarding destination. What else would you expect from a town whose name comes from a Coast Salish word meaning “Mother of the Wind”? Winds rise before noon and blow steadily until dusk. Combine this phenomenon with the manmade Squamish Spit, which projects straight out into Howe Sound, and the ideal conditions for wind sports are created.
Squamish is proud to host the West Coast Open and Canadian Kiteboarding Nations. With kiteboarding becoming an Olympic sport in 2016, Squamish is primed to become a training destination for the best athletes in the sport.
Wind sports are thrilling spectator sports. On any given day, you can check out the acrobatics of freestylers or watch racers zoom along from Nexen Beach or the Spit, with gorgeous views of the Stawamus Chief, Shannon Falls and Mount Garibaldi in the background.
