Day of Mourning ceremony to honour and remember fallen workers

Please join us for the B.C. Day of Mourning ceremony, an annual commemoration of fallen workers in our community, province and country. The ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 29 at 11 a.m. at the Pavilion Park Workers’ Monument in Downtown Squamish.

The Workers' Monument in Pavilion Park includes the names of local residents who have lost their lives on the job, including firefighters, loggers, RCMP members and others. The monument is located just south of the Arts Council Building.

“The Day of Mourning ceremony reminds us of the profound importance of safety at work, and remembers those we’ve lost to tragic workplace accidents and disease,” says District of Squamish Mayor Patricia Heintzman. “Let’s all take this opportunity to honour our friends, family and colleagues and consciously reaffirm our intention to prevent future tragedies so that they leave a legacy of awareness of worker safety standards and procedures throughout our community.”

Day of Mourning is a national event organized by labour groups, unions and municipalities across the country who come together to remember those who have lost their lives to work-related incidents or occupational disease. Though the national Day of Mourning is April 28, the ceremony in Squamish has been organized to fall on the nearest Sunday.

The District wishes to acknowledge and remember the loss of fallen workers in our community and extends continued condolences to family and friends:
