Dr. David Strangway’s impact on Squamish “profound”

The District of Squamish wishes to express deep sadness over the passing of Quest University Canada founder, Dr. David Strangway.

“One cannot underestimate the impact Dr. Strangway had on our community,” says District of Squamish Mayor Patricia Heintzman. “He brought his great vision for education, learning and academia to our community and found a home here where he could nurture this ideal and ultimately realize it. He also instilled in us that learning and knowledge is not just about academics or education, but that it can become a part of a community’s vernacular, a language that drives our economy and our population, the idea that knowledge is valuable in a community sense.”

When Strangway brought the idea of Quest University forward, it opened doors in Squamish at a time when that inspiration and sense of new opportunity was needed. “The community is so lucky to have been the location for his dream; and now his amazing legacy, Quest University, has become foundational in our community, and will continue to be long into the future,” Heintzman continues.

Strangway is remembered and thanked for his vision, his passion and his perseverance, and the District wishes to extend sincere condolences to his wife, family, and the entire Quest community.

“On a personal note, he was so wise and, though a man of few words, his words were never wasted; they were always profound and helpful,” Heintzman recalls. “He will be missed.”

Strangway lived in Squamish for several years while the university was being developed. He also sat on the Squamish Oceanfront Development Corporation board of directors during this time, helping to bring inspiration for the oceanfront lands.

“He obviously saw something special here by allowing and trusting Squamish to be the backdrop for his vision for education of the future - to develop critical thinking, intellectual breadth, and an informed, worldly perspective within students from all over the world. For that we are forever grateful,” concludes Heintzman.
