High Streamflow Advisory issued for Howe Sound

The River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for Howe Sound. A High Streamflow Advisory is issued when river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but that no major flooding is expected.  Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

major weather pattern shift is expected to occur this weekend and the cold arctic outflow that has affected the province over the past week is expected to switch to moist, mild weather systems.

Moderate precipitation amounts of 50-100 mm is expected for the Lower Mainland with freezing levels expected to rise to 1,500 metres on Sunday for the South Coast. Heavy mountain snow accumulation is expected throughout the province. Lower elevation creeks and rivers are most at risk, especially where recent coastal snowfall may create a flashier rain-on-snow event.

River levels are expected to rise quickly in response to this storm, with high flows expected Sunday through Monday.

The public is advised to stay clear of the fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks during the high-streamflow period.

The River Forecast Centre will continue to monitor the conditions and will provide updates as conditions warrant.
