Mayor Kirkham awarded Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal

District of Squamish Mayor Rob Kirkham has been awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his dedicated service and contributions to his community and Canada. The Mayor was nominated on behalf of the community by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), in recognition of Squamish’s contribution to creating a new era for Federal-Municipal partnership over the past decade.

It recognizes the important role municipalities – and their elected leaders – play in ensuring our prosperity and high quality of life,” said Karen Leibovici, FCM President in an e-mail to Mayor Kirkham.<br><br>Squamish’s involvement with FCM has made possible the new federal-municipal partnership that has led to the Gas Tax Fund, the Building Canada Plan and the federal government’s commitment to develop a new long-term infrastructure plan to strengthen cities and communities across the country, and protect the quality of life of all Canadians. <br><br>“I’m honoured to be recognized with this medal and gratefully accept it on behalf of the community,” says Mayor Kirkham. “We are a vibrant and diverse community on the cusp of greatness and comprised of engaged and active citizens; this medal is recognition of that reality. I pledge my ongoing commitment to serving the community and to helping shape it into what I know it can become.”<br><br>The medal will be presented to the Mayor at the February 19, 2013 Regular Business Meeting of Council.<br><br>Created to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen’s accession to the Throne, the medal is awarded by the Governor General of Canada to Canadians who have made a significant contribution to a particular province, territory, region or community within Canada, or an achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada.</p>
