Snow Update - December 28, 2017

Update 3:45 p.m. -  Crews continue to remove snow from the red routes and will be "widening out" the road -- not to clear the bike lanes, as has been suggested in social media threads - but to ensure there is enough room for snow storage for the additional snow expected to fall. If we do not widen-out, it could result in losing road width on the main routes. It's also a priority to push snow back to the ditches and catch basins in anticipation of rainfall starting tomorrow.

Crews understand that it is frustrating to residents when their driveways get filled in at the ends by the snowplows. On subsequent passes, we will try to remove significant windrows across driveways as much as possible. We thank everyone for their patience as crews are trying their best to keep the roads safe and prepare for additional snow and possible rain, as efficiently as possible.

Teams are working at various locations throughout the District. After the initial snow storm has subsided and we have managed to widen back the red routes, we will begin secondary routes, beginning with hills. If your road has not been plowed within 24 hours after the snow has stopped falling, please contact the District at 604-815-6868. Some roads will still have compact snow on them. As material is added to loosen the snow and/or ice, the snow will loosen and can then be removed. Please drive with caution over the coming days while we work through the clean-up.

Crews are asking residents to please remove all vehicles from the road. With more snow possible, we are running out of storage space and it is difficult for plows to maintain the roads efficiently.

9 a.m. - It's snowing! The District of Squamish Roads and Drainage team has all equipment out, focusing on RED ROUTES at this time and concentrating on keeping the hills drive-able and transit routes open. Secondary routes will follow as the day permits; laneways are last. Crews will also be focused on pushing back snow for drainage purposes in the coming days.

Residents are asked to please remove vehicles from the roads wherever possible, so equipment can work properly and emergency access can be kept clear. Residents are also kindly asked to keep their sidewalks cleared/maintained as per our bylaw, for the safety of their fellow neighbours. We know it gets tricky as snowplows pass through and often deposit more snow on the sidewalks, but please do your best. Any neighbours or teenagers who can help out other neighbours, please do. Thank you from your community!

More information on our snow clearing procedures and bylaw can be found on our website here.
