Statement Regarding Kiteboarder Fatal Accident

On July 1, 2024 at 4:17 p.m., Squamish Fire Rescue received a 9.1.1. call regarding an injured kiteboarder at the watersports beach area at Sp’akw’us Feather Park on the Squamish oceanfront peninsula. Despite extensive rescue and resuscitation efforts, the kiteboarder was confirmed deceased at the scene.

The District is deeply saddened by this outcome and wishes to extend heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time. The District would also like to express gratitude to all those who stepped in to help, and to recognize the swift response of the Squamish Windsport Society (SWS) operations crew on duty at Pepahim (Spit Island) who reached the injured kiteboarder within minutes and began first aid in this emergency situation. Appreciation is also extended to the tireless efforts of Squamish Fire Rescue crews and all first responders on scene.

The District is working with key parties to understand the details of the accident and any next steps that may result from the investigation.
