Merrill Park

The District of Squamish is partnering with the Squamish Trails Society (STS) to improve trail access to Merrill Park in Garibaldi Highlands.

The traditional access point has been off of Greenwood Way through private property. This access is now closed due to the development of the property.  STS will be developing alternative public access points to Merrill Park.  Four public-access easements were incorporated into the design of Merrill Park when the park land was set aside but these access points were not fully developed. Each of these easements is 16' wide allowing for a buffered trail access point into the park.

STS created the first major trail into Merrill Park in 2005 behind St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.  This trail leads to the beautiful summit where they installed a simple park bench. It has been a very popular trail for hiking, riding and dog walking and is the only developed and signed access point into the park.  Unfortunately, it doesn't allow easy access for all of the homes to the North and East.  STS is now prepared to develop these valuable public access points with the support of the District of Squamish.

While there has been 40 years of unchecked growth over these public easements,  it is still possible for STS to create simple accesses without the use of large machines.  The objective is to try and maintain privacy buffers to each adjoining neighbor while building a trail access. Neighbourhood support for this initiative is valued and appreciated.
