Garbage Collection
The annual Solid Waste Utility fee is based on garbage tote size. The smaller the tote, the lower the fee. Tote size can be changed once a year.
The fee include collection and processing of:
- garbage
- recycling
- organics
- Keep recyclables and organics out of your garbage tote. Use it only for trash.
- Rinse your tote regularly to reduce smells that attract wildlife.
Recycling Collection
To ensure collection, only place accepted items in your recycling tote. "Contaminated" totes may be left uncollected.
Contamination happens when you:
- Place unaccepted items in your curbside recycling tote.
- Prepare accepted items incorrectly (e.g., stacking, bundling or bagging items, leaving food waste inside containers), making them unrecyclable.
The District conducts routine audits. Contaminated totes may not be emptied.

- Avoid contamination
- Do not bundle, bag or otherwise contain your recyclables, with the exception of shredded paper (contained in a separate paper bag or cardboard box within the tote).
- Clean and rinse all containers.
- Do not put containers in other containers.
- Remove the lids from containers and put them loose in your recycle tote.
- All recycling must fit into the cart with the lid closed.
Organics Collection
Please ensure your totes are closed at the time of collection.
If you have more than you can fit in the tote, you can:
- stockpile for a later date
- use a backyard composter
- leave grass clippings on the lawn
- take it to the Squamish Landfill Public Depot for a small fee
- ask your neighbours if they have any extra space.
- sign up for a second organics tote (for an annual fee) during the annual tote exchange period.
- Collect food scraps and food soiled paper in your kitchen container.
- You can line your kitchen container with newspaper or paper bags, or use it on its own.
- Plastic bags of any type are not permitted - even those that claim they are compostable.
- The "Green Lid" compostable bins are acceptable.
- Create a paper liner.
- Empty your kitchen container into your organics tote and layer with yard waste if possible.
- Rinse your kitchen catcher regularly.
