Squamish Celebrates Public Works Week May 20 to 26, 2012

The District of Squamish joins other provinces and municipalities across Canada in celebrating the 53rd National Public Works Week (NPWW) from May 20 to 26, 2012.  The District will participate once again by encouraging local residents to take part in activities aimed at building awareness about the important work Public Works carries out.

Alternative Approval Process

The District of Squamish is undertaking the alternative approval process for four Capital Works Loan Authorization Bylaws:

Bylaw 2208, 2012: Constructing general capital works including protective services capital works generally, corporate services capital works generally, community services capital works generally, and engineering and parks capital works generally, including incidental expenses.

Bylaw 2209, 2012: Constructing water system improvements including incidentals. 

Bylaw 2211, 2012: Constructing sewer system improvements including incidentals.

Bylaw 2214, 2012: Constructing a synthetic turf park including incidentals.

Elector response forms for these alternative approval processes are available to the public at Municipal Hall (37955 Second Avenue).

The District of Squamish has issued a Request for Proposals for redevelopment and redesign our corporate website. 

Please note the submission date for the District of Squamish website redevelopment RFP has changed to Tuesday, May 22, 2012.

Cheakamus River Bridge Traffic Interruption

Cheakamus River Bridge (at Sunwolf) will be single lane alternating traffic Thursday, May 3 from 8am to 6pm. Please expect delays.  Crews will make every effort to minimize inconvenience.

2012 PITCH-IN Week Fastest Picker

The District of Squamish 2012 PITCH-IN Week Fastest Picker Contest was a great success on April 25, 2012!

Garbage was picked up over a period of ten minutes all around the Squamish Youth Centre by three teams:

Media – Mountain FM and The Chief
Student Leadership Club and friends
District of Squamish team

Congratulations to the winning team: The Student Leadership Club team!

Wildlife Alert / Trail Closure in Valleycliffe UPDATE

Due to no further reports of cougar activity in the area, the Stawamus River Dyke Trail network has now been re-opened.

Please report all wildlife sightings/encounters to the Conservation Officer 24 hour hotline at:  1-877-952-7277 (RAPP) or #7277 on your cell phone.

Spring Clean Squamish!

The District of Squamish Invites All Residents to
Register Now and Take Part in PITCH-IN Week April 23rd to 30th, 2012

Squamish is encouraging everyone to “pitch in” and help clean up the District during national PITCH-IN Week April 23rd to 30th, 2012.  Squamish residents are invited to take part in activities that clean up, restore and/or preserve the environment and help to benefit and enhance the community.  Many events are scheduled once again this year, including the Fastest Picker Contest, Community Clean up Days, a 20 Minute Squamish Makeover and the Re-Use-It Fair.

“Every year Squamish residents and businesses promote respect for our natural environment by cleaning up litter and other garbage from urban, rural and wilderness areas,” said Mayor Rob Kirkham. “It’s about helping our community develop and grow in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.”
