District of Squamish warns against mailing property tax cheques due to potential Canada Post job action
With the property tax deadline rapidly approaching, the District of Squamish has been warning residents to be aware of the potential for a Canada Post mail delivery interruption. If property tax cheques are not received by the deadline of July 4, 2016, a five per cent penalty will apply. Any delay in mail delivery, including a strike, will result in payment being late and the penalty owing. Residents are being urged to consider alternative methods of payment in order to meet the deadline.
Alternative methods to pay include:
- In-person at Municipal Hall: Open Monday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed July 1.
- Cheque by delivery to Municipal Hall (must be received by Reception or in the After Hours Box by end of day July 4).
- Internet or telephone banking (be aware of banks that may time stamp according to Eastern Time).
The B.C. Home Owner Grant reduces the amount of property tax paid for principal residences. The grant application must be completed each year before the property tax deadline. Homeowner grants can be claimed online at squamish.ca/propertytax.
Residents who have not received a Property Tax Notice should contact Financial Services at 604.815.5035. A five per cent penalty will be added to current taxes which are not paid by July 4, 2016 and an additional five per cent will be added to current taxes not paid by July 31, 2016.
