Rain and warm temperatures a concern during upcoming weather system
The District of Squamish is preparing for an extreme weather event (heavy rain, rain-on-snow) following an Environment Canada briefing Tuesday morning. Heavy rains and warm temperatures are expected between Tuesday afternoon and Thursday. Squamish could receive up to 170 mm of rainfall.
The River Forecast Centre is issuing a High Streamflow Advisory for: Howe Sound including the Stawamus River, Squamish River and tributaries in the Squamish area.
This storm cycle is expected to hit the South Coast between Tuesday and Thursday. Heavy rainfall is expected, particularly over the Tuesday to Wednesday period. Temperatures are expected to rise sharply through Tuesday, with freezing levels approaching 3,000 metres. Snowmelt is expected to contribute to river runoff during this storm event.
The District is keeping a close eye on the storm conditions and Operations crews are preparing for anticipated high river flows.
