Ice Arena update – September 4

The following is an update on the Brennan Park Recreation Centre ice arena.

Despite extensive efforts to improve humidity levels at the arena, levels have not adequately improved. Facilities staff continue to work to procure specialized industrial equipment to address the humidity issue. Two options are being evaluated, both of which will result in a delayed re-opening of the arena. As a result, ice arena programs will be cancelled through end of day Friday, September 12. We will provide a further update early next week on the extent of the closure.

We understand how extremely frustrating this is to our community ice users, however we are diligently reviewing the options to implement the right solution that will re-open the arena.

There is a current system to provide dehumidification to the arena, however it is older equipment that is being strained due to current conditions (increased humidity, outside air temperature, renovation project impacts). In tandem to procuring industrial equipment, we are proactively replacing key components of our existing system.

Please be assured the ice arena closure is a high-priority and we will continue to keep the community informed along the way.  Staff are in regular contact with all user arena groups and are centralizing communication with user group contacts to discuss logistics and support around the closure.

We are listening to community feedback and are developing an FAQ to help address the questions that the community has raised.
