Preventing and Thawing Frozen Pipes
District Operations staff have received a number of calls from homeowners about frozen pipes, which have resulted in the homeowners having no water. We would like to remind homeowners that NOT winterizing your home may result in frozen or burst pipes inside your home:
- Have you removed and stored your garden hoses?
- Do you know where your water line shutoff is located (under your home, garage, ...laundry room)? New homes may have frost-free hose bibs.
- Have you turned off all external faucets and drained and released water and pressure from those pipes?
SIGNS of FROZEN PIPES:
- No water coming out of your faucet;
- Water is off yet you hear water rushing - this may be a burst burst pipe somewhere within your house;
- Ice formed on external hose bibs.
WHAT TO DO:
Gently thaw the area. Please DO NOT use blowtorches as this is a major fire hazard
