Public call for submissions to the District of Squamish Street Banner Project

The District of Squamish is once again calling on local artists who would like to see their artwork featured on the streets of Squamish. The District has announced the Squamish 2022 Street Banner Project which will see a series of artist-designed banners on streetlight poles located in Downtown Squamish, Garibaldi Estates, Tantalus Road, and Brennan Park Recreation Centre. A public call for submissions was launched by the Squamish Arts Council, and both Squamish and Squamish Nation artists specializing in any media are encouraged to apply. The deadline for submissions is March 21, 2022. 

“Our street banners add vibrancy and energy to our local streetscapes while their imagery often offers a reflection of our community and its spirit,” says District of Squamish Mayor Karen Elliott. “Squamish is fortunate to have such a vastly talented artistic community and we are grateful to have the opportunity to use this type of medium to showcase their artwork to locals and visitors alike.”  

This is the first public call for submissions by the Squamish Arts Council for the Squamish Street Banner Project which was previously headed by the District of Squamish Public Art Select Committee which completed its mandate in 2020. The winner from the previous call in 2016, Sarah Symes, saw her bright and bold interpretations of Howe Sound, Stawamus Chief and the Squamish River line the streets of Squamish and bolster the town's streetscape for over four years.  

 “Street banners create a sense of community pride and give us the opportunity to highlight the extensive local art scene that thrives here,” says Katherine Kunze of the Squamish Arts Council. “Squamish is a place unlike any other and we are looking for banner submissions that highlight the unique community that we're all so lucky to belong to.” 

Submissions for the Squamish 2022 Street Banner project will be reviewed by members of the Squamish Arts Council and will be judged based on originality, character and artistic merit. The successful artist not only receives a $2000 prize, but will also have the opportunity to work directly with the printing company to implement their design. This will allow for quality control on all parts of the reproduction and printing process.
