Landfill Vertical Expansion Phase 3

The Squamish Landfill has entered phase 3 of the Vertical Expansion project. Due to available budget, and operational constraints at the landfill, the vertical expansion project was broken into three phases to expedite construction.

Phase 1 consisted of site clearing and grubbing, surface water infrastructure and construction of a toe berm to support road access. This work was completed July 2017.

Phase 2 consisted of extending the leachate piping network, subgrade preparation, and building a Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining wall approx. 500 metres in length and 7 metres high. This work was completed in April 2019.

2019 will see the completion of phase 3 of the vertical expansion of the landfill. This work will include construction of the remainder of the MSE wall to a finished height of approximately 10 metres.

Timeline: Through November 2019

Impact:

This work is expected to have minor impacts on day-to-day landfill operations. Please expect increased large truck traffic as material is hauled in material to build the wall. The District is working closely with Green For Life to mitigate any delays or impacts this work will have on the public using the facility.
