Gas leak shuts down Government Road near Centennial Way; Residents advised to shelter in place

FortisBC has advised that the gas leak has been capped and there are no further public safety concerns. 

Residents of 39884 Government Road can now return home. 

The road will be re-opened shortly and emergency crews will be leaving the area.

Update 3:15 p.m.

Residents of the mobile home park at 39884 Government Road are now being evacuated due to their proximity to the gas leak, and a recent shift in wind direction. No other addresses are being evacuated at this time.

Emergency crews are doing constant monitoring of gas levels at various points in the neighbourhood to guide decision making around evacuations and ensure public safety. As a precaution, other addresses are advised to continue to shelter in place – i.e. keep windows and doors closed.

FortisBC crews continue their work to cap the gas leak, and further updates will be provided as new information is available.

The road remains closed.

Original post:

Emergency personnel remain on scene in the area of No Name Road in response to a gas leak resulting from excavation work. The 9.1.1. call came in at 10:49 a.m. 

FortisBC crews are working on site to cap the gas leak.

No evacuations have been necessary, however first responders knocked on doors earlier today instructing residents in the immediate vicinity to close windows, as well as switch off all gas appliances.

A shelter-in-place is currently being advised for residents in the broader area while work to cap the gas leak continues.

A road closure remains in place on Government Road between No Name Road and Centennial Way.

School buses will be running as usual, and will detour around the closure to get children to their regular stops.

Highway 99 was temporarily closed but has re-opened in both directions.

We will continue to provide updates as new information is available.
