 Idea: Real-time Air Quality Monitoring

Comprehensive and accurate air quality monitoring is the first and most crucial step to controlling air pollution. Many municipalities are adopting smart city programs; sensor-equipped smart cities are expected to emerge over the upcoming decade and relevant infrastructure is being planned and installed. It is anticipated that real-time air monitoring will be an essential part of Canada’s future smart city infrastructure.

The idea is to develop Internet of Things (IoT)-based air quality monitoring network using low-cost, reliable, compact and portable air quality monitoring units. AirSENCE™ (Air SENsor for Chemicals in the Environment) units – real-time air quality monitoring devices – will be installed at key locations within the District (schools, intersections, hospitals, downtown area, highways, etc.) for real-time air quality monitoring. Finer scale real-time data can be used in a wide number of applications and will improve the quality of life of residents and district’s resilience to air quality concerns.

A.U.G. Signals Ltd. (AUG), in partnership with the Southern Ontario Centre for Atmospheric Aerosols Research (SOCAAR) has developed AirSENCE™. With the ability to continuously and quantitatively analyze multiple air pollutants at low cost, this innovative device is a revolution in environmental monitoring. Data from AirSENCE™ can be accessed at any time remotely via the Internet or Smartphone.
