The Squamish & District Forestry Association represents the majority of timber rights holders in the Sea to Sky Natural Resources District (Northern Howe Sound, Squamish/Elaho River Valleys, and Lillooet River Valley) and represents the Industry in a Memorandum of Understanding with the District of Squamish toward a collaborative (incl. the Province) Forest Industry Land Use Plan. The timber harvesting industry includes over 65 firms in Squamish and directly employs over 300 persons in the Corridor.

Idea: Eco-industrial Park

Wood waste handling represents a significant cost burden and constraint for Forestry at this time. However, it also represents an opportunity for the community at large.

This project aims to establish an eco-industrial park to enable collaboration and innovation in the economic utilization of local forest industry wood wastes and other organic waste streams to alleviate environmental and land use challenges as well as cost burdens associated with current disposal practices, and foster new commercial opportunities for local business, including Squamish Nation businesses.

The project also proposes to introduce new applications for the District of Squamish Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to assist in land use planning, bioenergy infrastructure planning, and inventory of sites and facilities relevant to this biomass innovation proposal.

The District plans to use the five goals identified within the Squamish2040 Official Community Plan to guide the development of the Challenge statement. Click to view the five goals in a new window.
