District team actively addressing Wastewater Treatment Plant issue

The District team, including essential service staff, are working to solve an issue at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Treated wastewater has periodically overflowed the clarifier tank and entered the Harris Slough with the heavy rain and during the times when community flows are at their highest. This issue was first evident on October 24, and was reported to the Provincial Emergency Program as required per the District’s Operating Permit and provincial and federal regulations.

District staff are working with the guidance of a consulting Qualified Environmental Professional, as well as the District’s Manager of Environmental Services. There is no anticipated concern for human or environmental health given the level of treatment the wastewater has reached and the amount of dilution with rainwater; however, sampling will be conducted to ensure regular ongoing monitoring. The situation is being managed by diverting flows to storage tanks on site when necessary.

Work to determine the appropriate resolution is underway. More details will be provided once this plan is finalized.
