Vote By Mail

On Saturday, October 15, 2022, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., the District of Squamish will hold the general local government and School District No. 48 elections for Mayor, Councillors and School Trustees.  

Electors wishing to vote by mail must meet the qualifications to vote and register to vote with the District of Squamish election office.

Elector Qualifications

Resident Electors
  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day for the election; and
  • a Canadian Citizen (No Permanent Residents or Landed Immigrants); and
  • a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
  • a resident of the District of Squamish; and
  • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law.
Non-Resident Property Elector
  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day for the election; and
  • a Canadian Citizen (No Permanent Residents or Landed Immigrants) ; and
  • a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
  • a registered owner of real property in the District of Squamish for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration. Proof of ownership is required (ie property title) ; and
  • not entitled to register as a resident elector; and
    • the only persons who are registered owners of the real property, either as joint tenants or tenants in common, are individuals who are not holding the property in trust for a corporation or another trust; and
    • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law; and
    • if there is more than one registered owner of the property, only one of those individuals may, with the written consent of the majority of owners, register as a non-resident property elector.

How to Register to Vote

You must register on the District of Squamish List of Electors, either in advance (until August 23, 2022) or at the time of filling in your ballot. If you missed the advance registration, an application form will be included in your mail ballot package.

Requesting a Mail Ballot Package

An elector wishing to vote by mail ballot shall apply by giving their name and address to the Chief Election Officer, before the end of election day, October 15, 2022.

Please complete the Application to Vote by Mail  and submit to the District of Squamish by hand, mail, or email. Alternatively, you may telephone or email the District of Squamish election office and provide the following information:

  1. Full name,
  2. Residential address,
  3. Address of the property in relation to which you are voting (for non-resident property electors),
  4. Method of delivery of your mail ballot package:
    1. pick up at District of Squamish office, OR
    2. regular letter mail through Canada Post to residential address, OR
    3. regular letter mail through Canada Post to an alternate address that you provide when requesting the ballot package.
  5. If you are not on the list of electors, to ensure you receive the correct registration application form in your package, you must indicate whether you are going to be registering as a resident of non-resident property elector.

The District of Squamish will send out mail ballot packages and will have them available for pickup at Municipal Hall, as soon as the ballots are available.

To be counted for the election or assent voting, your mail ballot must be received by the Chief Election Officer no later than 8 p.m. on October 15, 2022.
