BC Hydro issues Spill Notice for Cheakamus Dam discharge

The District of Squamish has received a Spill Notice from BC Hydro informing that the discharge from the Cheakamus Dam has increased to 170 to 230 cubic metres per second due to high inflows.

BC Hydro is required to issue a Spill Notice when discharges are greater than 170 cubic metres per second. This is considered routine operations to manage reservoir levels and not an emergency event for BC Hydro.

Rapid increases in water levels within the next 24 hours are possible. There is the potential for top of river bank flows (bankfull conditions).

Residents downstream of Daisy Lake Dam should use caution around rivers and streams, and be aware that levels may increase quickly and without warning. The District of Squamish is monitoring the situation and taking precautionary measures.

Residents who may be experiencing flooding are asked to contact Municipal Hall at 604-892-5217, or the 24-hour emergency line outside of business hours at 604-815-4040.

It should say “ the discharge has increased From 170 to 230”
Is that being done to prevent the dam from breaking ?

      Hello Margo

BC Hydro issues a spill notice "as a precaution when flows are expected to change from normal seasonal conditions. Water is released in a controlled manner from the reservoir through the dam's spillway or other outlets to reduce the rate of rise in the reservoir." (bchydro.com)
