Parking Downtown

Project Overview

A 2023 Downtown Parking Study was undertaken to assess changes in parking conditions since the 2017 Downtown Parking Study was completed and to respond to, and propose solutions for, resident and business parking concerns.

Latest Updates

On Tuesday, September 12, 2023, Council approved a recommendation to receive the 2023 Downtown Parking Study report for information, and for staff to scope the 2023 Downtown Parking Study report recommendations in consideration of the 2023-2036 Strategic Plan objectives and 2024-2028 Financial Plan and bring forward to Council a Phased Parking Management Implementation Plan, which includes on-street paid parking and paid parking at tourism-focused locations, for consideration.

Background

In 2016, the District developed a Parking Strategy with the goal of maintaining reasonable parking systems and infrastructure in order to support citizens and economic development initiatives while encouraging a transition from private vehicle use to alternate modes of transportation. The Parking Strategy recommended that the District conduct, and repeat periodically, a downtown parking inventory and utilization study to identify if parking problems exist, and if so, to what extent.

Since that time, a shortage of available parking spaces, particularly in the downtown core, became a concern for a number of Squamish residents and businesses. The 2023 Downtown Parking Study was undertaken to assess changes in parking conditions since the 2017 Downtown Parking Study was completed and to respond to, and propose solutions for, these parking concerns.

The District of Squamish retained ISL Engineering and Land Services Ltd. to undertake a review of potential parkade locations, parkade size, develop a conceptual design and cost estimate, and review the cash-in-lieu bylaw. The 2020 Downtown Parkade Study report contains background information, including results of the 2017 Parking Study, land use data, future land use estimates, proposed parkade design, cost estimates and funding strategies.
