Marine Zoning Update 2020-22

New marine zones and regulations have been developed for Squamish marine areas as part of Stage 2 of the overall Squamish Zoning Bylaw Update in 2020.
Overview

The intent of these municipal marine regulations is to provide for and enhance the coordination, shared use and protection of marine coastal areas within the District of Squamish. Updating and refining the District’s zoning tools is identified as an immediate priority action within the Squamish Marine Action Strategy (endorsed in 2018).

UPDATE: October 5 2022

Following the Public Hearing held on September 6, 2022, District of Squamish Council gave Third Reading to Bylaw 2771. The bylaw was approved by the BC Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure and adopted by Council on October 4, 2022.

Second Reading July 19 2022: Final proposed Bylaw 2771 amendments were re-presented to community and Council on July 19, 2022. Council gave second reading to the bylaw, as amended.

October 2021 Bylaw Review: Following the electronic public hearing held on June 8, 2021, District of Squamish Council rescinded second reading of Bylaw 2771. Council also directed staff to bring the bylaw back for future consideration of an amended second reading based on engagement regarding the M4 Zone with the forest industry and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Engagement on Bylaw 2771 has continued through summer 2021 and a Council Committee of the Whole meeting update is scheduled for October 12, 2021.

Past Project Updates: Second Reading of Bylaw 2771 May 18 2021

Council gave second reading to Bylaw 2771, as amended on  May 18, 2021, and directed scheduling of a Public Hearing for Bylaw 2771 on June 8, 2021. A summary of additional intergovernmental and stakeholder comments was included in the Council report package linked below.

At this meeting Council received and endorsed initial draft marine zones as presented and directed staff to bring forward a zoning amendment bylaw for reading consideration subject to Council input. The draft marine zones and zoning maps continue to be revised based on this input and ongoing engagement, and will be brought back to Council in early 2021.
