Campfires and Open Air Burning

Campfire Ban in Effect

All campfires within the District are currently prohibited and all campfire permits suspended until the ban is rescinded.

All campfires within the District are prohibited. All residential campfire permits are suspended and new applications are not being accepted at this time.

The following activities are prohibited:

  • Campfires
  • Category 2 and Category 3 fires (slash pile burning)
  • Fireworks
  • Sky lanterns
  • Binary exploding targets
  • Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description
  • Air curtain burners
  • Tiki torches
  • Wood-burning saunas and hot tubs

The following activities are strictly prohibited year-round within District of Squamish boundaries:

  • Fires in any public space, including riverbanks, mountainsides, and beaches
  • Open air burning, including yard waste, garden debris, and construction materials

The campfire prohibition does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, or propane, or portable campfire devices that use liquid, or gaseous fuel, provided they are CSA or ULC approved, and the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres.

Failure to comply with the District of Squamish Fire Service Bylaw No. 3190, 2025 may result in fines up to $1,000 under Schedule I of the of the Municipal Ticket Information Bylaw No. 1832.
