Stawamus Chief rock slide, April 19, 2015

A rock slide occurred on the Stawamus Chief in Squamish at approximately 11:50 a.m. Sunday morning, April 19, 2015.

April 20, 10:30 a.m. update:

The geological engineers are in the process of compiling their findings.  An update is anticipated in the next couple days.
 
The Mamquam Forest Service Road road is open but the climbing access trail to Angel's Crest is closed until further notice.  All hiking trails in the Chief are open including the Sea to Summit trail that leads to the top of the gondola.
 
The BC Parks website has been updated with this information and more signage will be posted this morning at the trail entry points.

April 19, 9 p.m. update:
Squamish Search and Rescue (SAR) and the RCMP have remained on site throughout the afternoon and evening working to assess geotechnical hazards within the rock slide area, and identify people out on the Chief to the cars in the parking lot.

There have been no missing persons reported and no information submitted that suggests anyone is unaccounted for. The RCMP remained on site until dark to connect with any remaining hikers or climbers, and all cars have now left the parking lot. At this point SAR is not anticipating that a further search and rescue effort will be required. 

The situation will be reassessed in the morning.
