Thor Froslev remembered

The District of Squamish is saddened to learn of the passing of Thor Froslev.

Thor came to Squamish in 1972 with a vision to bring arts and culture into a small B.C. logging town. This vision and a great amount of energy and passion became the legacies now known as the Brackendale Art Gallery (BAG) and Brackendale Eagle Festival.

Thor was one in a million. He loved people, music and art. He made everybody feel at home at the BAG since he first opened its doors in 1973, hosting concerts, events, exhibitions and shows. He served as a member of District of Squamish Council in 1976 and 1977.

Thor received a B.C. Achievement Award in 2016 for his work to establish both the Brackendale Art Gallery and annual Brackendale Eagle Festival and count. In 2018, the District of Squamish recognized Thor with the Freedom of the Municipality for his lasting contributions to arts, culture and environmental societies in Squamish. This recognition honours citizens for their outstanding contributions to community and is the highest recognition a municipality can bestow.

In July 2022, Thor was recognized with a large-scale mural on Cleveland Avenue in Downtown Squamish.

The District wishes to extend its condolences to his wife Dorte and family, and to many in our community who are mourning his loss. His presence and unwavering commitment to art, culture and community will genuinely be missed.

So sorry to hear of Thor’s passing, I think I thought he would always be there. Condolences to his family and loved ones. He created a magical space that enriched so many lives over the decades. Was first there with Denise Larsen and Friends on a snowy night in the seventies. Forget what year my Eagle photo won a prize, but always stopped in when I went to see the Eagles. Recall some wonderful Valdy concerts and so much more. The 50th Anniversary concerts won’t be the same without his quiet presence, though I’m sure his spirit will be felt. RIP dear soul.

Since I was 5 yrs old I’ve known Thor. During my childhood I came to realize I was an artist & always felt accepted in his presence, supported to follow my path. My husband & I also later married in the gallery! All my love to Dorty & his family! He is remembered fondly.
