Mount Garibaldi Cemetery Expansion

Overview

Mount Garibaldi Cemetery is approaching capacity and needs expansion. It currently uses approximately 1/3 of the property, with the remaining 2/3 forested. A two-phased expansion project is planned for 2025. The project will improve the experience and functionality of the existing and future section of the cemetery. Once complete, cemetery services will be expanded to include green burial and scattering garden.

Project Information

Phase 1 - Land Clearing

  • March 3 to 17: Removal of the majority of trees and all vegetation on approximately 1.6 acres of land to the east of the existing cemetery grounds.

Phase 2 - Construction

Construction is expected from July through December and includes:

  • Updated landscaping
  • Restoration of historic features
  • Increased capacity for existing internment options plus green burial and scattering garden
  • Extending the burial sites to the east
  • Relocation and expansion/improvement of maintenance area, including a new maintenance building
  • Grading and fencing

Construction Information

We kindly ask visitors to remove any flowers, ornaments, or personal items from gravesites. This will help protect these cherished mementos during the initial clearing phase and ensure a respectful transition as the project moves forward. If you are unable to retrieve items before this date, any remaining decorations will be carefully set aside for collection.

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work to expand the cemetery, providing additional burial options, including green burials and a scattering garden.

Forest and vegetation clearing has begun, followed by construction expected from July to December 2025.

During the project, some minor impacts are expected. Cemetery access will be reduced, and there will be temporary cremation delays until March 17. Nearby residents and visitors may experience noise from chainsaws, tree felling, and trucking, as well as increased truck traffic on Government Road. Additionally, the adjacent trail to the east will be temporarily closed, with signage posted to indicate the closure.

Forest and vegetation clearing now complete. Consultants are actively completing design milestones in preparation for construction, which is expected to take place from July to December 2025.

The adjacent trail to the east, affected by the land clearing, has resulted in SORCA being retained to complete a 100-metre re-route. This work will begin on April 22 with help from students at Don Ross Secondary. We expect the re-route to be open by the end of May 2025.

Construction Impacts

  • No existing grave sites will be affected by the land clearing.
  • Cremation services will be unavailable between March 3 and 17 while land clearing is underway.
  • Reduced cemetery access.
  • Noise impacts from chainsaws, falling trees and trucks.
  • Increased truck traffic on Government Road.
  • Temporary closure of the adjacent trail to the east.
