New Westwinds Seniors Hub to open for 55+ arts, culture, education and wellness programs

The District of Squamish has a new recreation and culture programming facility for the 55+ community. The Westwinds Seniors Hub, located within the new Westwinds Seniors Living Building, opens to the public on Tuesday, September 6 with programs set to begin Monday, September 12. The facility is located at 38275 Third Avenue, directly behind the Chieftain Centre, with 18 visitor parking stalls, two accessible parking stalls and two drop-off parking stalls for patrons of the programming space, with additional street parking and transit stops nearby.

“A third programming space for our 55+ community, in addition to Brennan Park Recreation Centre and The 55 Activity Centre will help to ensure we continue to meet the diverse needs of our community,” says District of Squamish Mayor Karen Elliott. “We are very pleased to make this space at the Westwinds available in order to bring a range of activities and programming that reflects the interests and perspectives of our growing aging population directly to where they live, and in the heart of Downtown Squamish.”

Programming for the 55+ community is now offered across three facilities, Brennan Park Recreation Centre, The 55 Activity Centre and the Westwinds Seniors Hub, to maximize opportunities and to take advantage of the unique attributes of each space.

The Westwinds building includes a 2,413 square foot multi-purpose room with ample space to suit a range of activities, and a 1,466 square foot fitness and rehab space with equipment to support physical activity programming. A non-commercial kitchen space is available for coffee, tea and light refreshments.

A variety of arts, culture and education programming, as well gentle and rehabilitation fitness, such as Neuro-Fit, Re-Fit and yoga, will be offered.

A schedule of programs and activities and their associated space needs was informed in part by the results from a public survey that collected feedback on recreation and culture programming for residents aged 55 and older.

A new citizen-based Senior Citizens’ Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee will form this fall to guide the future of recreation and culture programming for the 55+ community in Squamish. The committee will collaborate with and provide recommendations to District staff on programs and focus on the delivery of programs across Brennan Park Recreation Centre, The 55 Activity Centre, and the Westwinds facility.

Background:

In June 2021, District engaged a steering group of committed residents aged 55 and older to determine how to best deliver a wide range of recreation programming across all three District facilities (Brennan Park Recreation Centre, The 55 Activity Centre, and the Westwinds Building).

The steering group identified three key focus areas for recreation programming for their age group:

The steering group was a result of a larger engagement strategy that was presented to Council in March 2021 with the goal of collecting community feedback and providing inclusive seniors programing reflective of needs and interests of the community.
