Aggressive Deer Encounter Near the Carpenter's Son Bridge (University Access Trail)
The BC Conservation Officer Service has received a report of aggressive deer in the University Access trail network in Garibaldi Highlands this morning. The public is advised to avoid using the trails in this area this weekend.
During fawning season, does can become particularly aggressive towards people and pets, as they protect their young.
This means deer may bluff charge or follow you to move you away from the fawn. Small dogs can also be easily hurt by deer, as dogs can be perceived as predators.
Conservation officers encourage people to take precautions:
- Keep your dog on a leash - this can help prevent unintended encounters with deer
- Leave fawns alone - if you see a fawn, leave the area as the doe is likely nearby
- Never approach deer – give deer and all wildlife space to help prevent an encounter
- Be aware of your surroundings and watch out for deer.
