Brennan Park Recreation Centre Green and Accessibility Retrofit Project complete

The Green and Accessibility Retrofit Project (Project One), the first of many projects to upgrade Brennan Park Recreation Centre, is now complete. Patrick Weiler, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver – Sunshine Coast – Sea-to-Sky Country, Squamish Nation Elder Linda Williams and District of Squamish Mayor Armand Hurford gathered last week to mark the project’s completion.

This is the first of numerous projects anticipated for Brennan Park. Upgrades are anticipated to take place in phases as funding is secured. In Project One, more than 75 per cent of the upgrades took place behind the scenes, hidden in walls, ceilings and mechanical rooms. In addition to building repairs and remediation, some of these major enhancements include a centralized heat pump system, ammonia alarm and fire alarm system upgrades, and a new rooftop unit, plus numerous structural, energy efficiency and accessibility upgrades.  

Upgrades visible to the public include a renovated lobby with an improved customer service area and public gathering spaces, new lobby furniture, a shell space for a potential cafe, an elevator to a publicly accessible second floor, second-floor mezzanine with an accessible arena viewing area, improvements to existing ice arena change rooms, new storage lockers for user groups, universal and multi-stall washrooms, a new accessible arena change room, two new program rooms, and covered walkway to the pool entrance with new seating and bike racks.   

The $21-million project was funded in part by over $11.7 million from the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program (Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada) and $1.2 million from the Build Communities Strong Fund Community stream.  

In addition to the current work, a Recreation Centre Task Force (RCTF) has been established in response to community requests for improved recreation amenities at the Brennan Park Recreation site. Work is underway to understand the technical feasibility and cost of expanding/upgrading recreational facilities, current and future needs, recommending facility development options, and developing a funding strategy. Work began in June 2026 and there will be a series of presentations to Council over the next 12 months for decision-making and next steps.  

The District received an additional $10.4 million in federal and provincial funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program for Project Two to upgrade the exterior of the facility including insulation, windows and doors, seismic performance and electrical systems. This project timeline will be confirmed once key considerations from the RCTF work are available.
