Memorandum of Understanding to continue advancing interregional transit signed
MOU supports development of governance, funding, and service models for a Sea to Sky interregional transit service
The Sea to Sky Regional Transit Committee signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Province of British Columbia to work together on planning for the development of an interregional transit service. The proposed service would link Sea to Sky corridor communities operating from Líl̓wat Nation to Metro Vancouver.
Successful interregional transit requires strong partnerships and a coordinated approach.
The Líl̓wat Nation, Village of Pemberton, Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, Resort Municipality of Whistler, District of Squamish and the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) all work together on the Sea to Sky Regional Transit Committee, and have worked alongside the Province for more than a decade to advance an interregional transit solution for the Sea to Sky corridor. An interregional service was first highlighted through the Sea to Sky Transit Future Plan, developed in 2015 by BC Transit in collaboration with the public and regional partners and is based on extensive community engagement. That plan led to the 2017 Regional Transit Study, which explored short-and medium-term options for an interregional bus service and eventually led to the creation of the committee.
The MOU recognizes the shared interest in advancing an interregional service on Highway 99 (Sea to Sky Highway), to better connect communities, meet commuter demand, reduce congestion and ensure equitable access to goods and services. The MOU includes provincial guiding principles such as regional decision-making, integration between passenger transportation modes, leveraging partnership funding, collaboration and coordination between the private and public sector, and equity of access.

Formed in in 2019 with a vision to advance a regional transit service along the Sea to Sky corridor between L̓il̓wat Nation and Metro Vancouver, the transit committee includes representatives from: L̓il̓wat Nation, the Village of Pemberton, the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, the Resort Municipality of Whistler, the District of Squamish, and the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation).
