Archaeological Overview Assessment

The District of Squamish is undertaking an Archaeological Overview Assessment (AOA) to better understand and protect the rich cultural and archaeological heritage within our community. This project encompasses three priority actions as identified by the District of Squamish Heritage Management Strategy 2024: 

• Priority Action #1: Amend the OCP and Land Development Procedures Bylaw to designate a Development Approval Information Area (DAIA) for Archaeological Impact Assessment 
• Priority Action #2: Develop a Chance Find Protocol to strengthen cultural and archaeological resource protection 
• Priority Action #3: Conduct an Archaeological Overview Assessment (AOA) for the District

The AOA Project will help identify areas with potential archaeological significance. This proactive step ensures that future development and planning respects and preserves cultural heritage while supporting responsible growth.

The District has retained Campfire Archaeology to undertake the AOA Project, in close collaboration with Squamish Nation and with funding provided by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Local Government Development Approvals program (2024). 

Key goals of the AOA include:

• Mapping areas of archaeological potential.
• Informing land use planning and permitting processes.
• Strengthening relationships with First Nations through knowledge sharing and collaboration.
• Promoting public awareness and stewardship of archaeological resources.

This project reflects the District’s commitment to reconciliation, cultural protection, and thoughtful development.
