CPWA Selects District of Squamish as Winner of National Public Works Week Award

Public works award 2019

The Canadian Public Works Association (CPWA) has announced the District of Squamish as a winner of the organization’s 2019 National Public Works Week (NPWW) Awards Contest. Squamish’s 2019 NPWW celebration competed for the award with other Canadian municipalities with populations of 10,000 to 29,999. This is the fourth year that Squamish has received CPWA’s NPWW award.

The 2019 NPWW award will be presented by CPWA Board Member Matt Brown of the British Columbia chapter during Squamish’s November 5, 2019 Council Meeting at 6:00 PM in Municipal Hall, 37955 2nd Avenue, Squamish BC. Accepting the award for Squamish will be Director of Public Works Bob Smith and staff Ben Kineshanko, Scott Lamont and Kaoko Mori.

National Public Works Week annually recognizes the tens of thousands of women and men in North America who provide and maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as public works. In May of each year, municipalities throughout the U.S. and Canada celebrate NPWW with open houses, project and facility tours, parades, education, media events, school visits, and career events. Municipalities also use the week to recognize their staff – the women and men who play such an important role in their community’s quality of life.

“National Public Works Week is one of the best ways to increase public awareness about the crucial role of public works in the provision of services to our cities and towns,” said Mr. Brown. “Squamish’s celebration of public works, from the equipment rodeo to the tours of the wastewater treatment plant, engaged residents in learning more about the services that public works provides and how important these services are to our community.”

In addition to District of Squamish Mayor Karen Elliott’s public proclamation declaring May 19 – 25, 2019 National Public Works Week, Squamish’s Public Works Week included interactive demonstrations, an equipment rodeo and infrastructure tours – all open to the public. More than 350 elementary school students, teachers and parents visited the public works yard to learn about heavy equipment, trails and sidewalk maintenance, horticulture, water distribution systems, fleet maintenance, GIS mapping systems, water conservation, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), fire hydrant maintenance, and wastewater collection and treatment. Squamish public works staff also participated in a career fair at Quest University and raised $390 for the local Community Christmas Charity.

"This recognition is a testament to the dedication and skill of our public works staff, their essential role in how our community functions, and their efforts to apply sustainability-focused education to their work," said Mayor Elliott. "Public Works Day is always a fun opportunity for our young citizens to connect face-to-face with our staff who show great pride in sharing a behind-the-scenes look at an average day on the job. Congratulations to our staff who helped us win this award and thank you for the work that you do every single day."

“CPWA is honoured to recognize the District of Squamish’s efforts to make National Public Works Week a success,” said Brown. “Public works services, personnel, and our infrastructure assets are essential to our communities but do not always enjoy a high level of public awareness. The high caliber of Squamish’s activities goes a long way to providing that awareness.”
