Squamish Adventure Centre Revitalization project

Project Update, February 2023:

Construction will soon begin on the revitalization plan for the Squamish Adventure Centre (SAC) made possible through Tourism Dependent Community funding from the Province of B.C. The $700,000 project will bring physical improvements to the SAC to improve the visitor experience and economic viability of the building. The SAC will close for two months beginning February 24 while renovations are underway.

Once complete, upgrades will include:

  1. Immersive Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh) Story tourism experience aimed at inspiring a new generation of travellers to Squamish.
  2. Theatre improvements to increase flexibility and modernize the space for meetings, trainings and events.

Tourism Squamish will continue to provide interim visitor services during the closure. For more information visit exploresquamish.com.

Background:

On September 28, 2021, Council endorsed a Province of B.C.-funded revitalization plan for the Squamish Adventure Centre (SAC) which includes physical improvements to the SAC building and the surrounding site.

These improvements are entirely funded through a $700,000 grant received by the Province of BC via its Tourism Dependent Communities Fund. Thirty-two communities that depend heavily on tourism revenue have received a combined $19.4 million through the Tourism Dependent Communities Initiative, part of StrongerBC: BC’s Economic Recovery Plan, intended to generate jobs, create valuable assets for communities and attract more visitors in the future as tourism economies emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

You can view the conceptual drawings, a key stakeholder engagement report, and the presentation made to Council below.

Purpose:
The project will refresh and enhance Squamish’s only purpose-built tourism centre while also improving its operational efficiency.

Business Need:
As the Squamish Adventure Centre building enters its 15th year of operation, the building and its operations would benefit from upgrades. Further external factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in technology and consumer shifts to digital and online services over the last 15 years, have highlighted the need to achieve maximum value of use of the space as a key community and District-owned asset.

Funding Source:
The $700,000 funding for this project is through the provincial Tourism Dependent Communities Fund.

Project Details:
The Squamish Adventure Centre project includes a visioning process to define a future operating model for the centre, a business planning process and physical upgrades to the centre.  The project is being supported by an advisory task force consisting of representatives from Tourism Squamish, the Squamish Chamber of Squamish and District of Squamish staff.  As per funding requirements, upgrades to the centre must begin by December 31, 2021 and be completed on or before March 31, 2024.

I strongly feel like whatever improvements are made, Electric Vehicle Charging Stations should be included in the plans.
There are a few DC Fast Chargers, BC Hydro ones downtown and Electrify Canada at London Drugs, but level 2 charging-the much cheaper to install ones, are very few and far between in Squamish.
Ideally it would be a combination of DC fast which is 30-40 minutes for most vehicles, and Level 2 which is 1-4 hours for most vehicles. These time frames get people to Whistler or Vancouver.
I am a member of the Vancouver Electric Vehicle Association, where there is lots of resources available if there are questions about the plethora of rebates available to help fund this.
    Thanks!

      Thank you, Byron.

The District recently received a large grant from Clean BC and Natural Resources Canada to support the installation of many level 2 and level 3 chargers throughout Squamish. The Squamish Adventure Centre has been identified as a top priority location for both types of chargers. Final acceptance of the grant took much longer than anticipated but we are moving forward with detailed planning in 2022, and should be installing EV infrastructure in 2023.

Re revitalisation of washroom facilities : not only counters need relplacing but we need hands free faucets and soap dispensers. It is unacceptable in these times that our Adventure Centre does not have these. Thank you , Moira Biggin-Pound
