HydroHaus Horticulture Inc. (HydroHaus) is a privately held company that designs and builds large span hybrid structures that provide increased natural lighting and dynamic insulation and shading.

Idea: Bio-village & local food production

HydroHaus has developed technology that enhances transparent roof and wall insulation over large spans. This technology helps to lower the cost of heating and cooling the internal space by up to 90%, making it ideal for greenhouses that need to be located in areas of extreme heat and cold.

HydroHaus proposes a three stage approach to create employment and affordable housing for Squamish while reducing wood-waste pollution and land contamination.

This is composed of three elements:

  • a closed-system hydroponic greenhouse
  • a waste-to-energy high efficiency gasification unit to use both newly generated and residual wood currently buried in Squamish
  • a diversified affordable housing project.

HydroHaus proposes developing a mix of up to five hundred housing and commercial/retail units that would be built around a village square and terraced over multiple floors. An ETFE [ethylene tetra fluoro ethylene] transparent and insulating roof… that would weigh one percent of glass and be capable of spanning vast distances would cover the entire structure and village square. This ETFE roof would allow year-round outdoor living and activities.

The District plans to use the five goals identified within the Squamish2040 Official Community Plan to guide the development of the Challenge statement. Click to view the five goals in a new window.
