Waste Collection for Multi-Family Homes

Multi-family homes, such as townhouses, apartments, and condos are required to have residential waste collection. Multi-family housing properties that do not have curbside collection are required to separate garbage, organics and recyclables into appropriate collection containers.

Requirements include:

  • Separating recycling, organic and garbage waste.
  • Placing garbage in clear bags. Opaque privacy bags are allowed but cannot exceed 10% of total waste.
  • Limiting mixed waste to no more than 20% of total waste in the first year (2018), reducing to 5% each year to a target of 5%.
  • Providing educational material to residents, tenants, employees and contractors.

To support multi-family properties and property managers, the District of Squamish provides assistance:

  • Signage
  • Informational materials
  • Implementation logistics
  • Guidance on waste room sizing, location and access
