District updates credit card payment options and fees
The District of Squamish can now accept in-person and online credit card payments of up to $25,000 for some Building, Planning, Engineering, Cemetery and Public Works permits and applications. A 2.4% surcharge will be applied to these charges in order to cover the fees incurred from credit card companies and avoid any additional cost to taxpayers.
This new service helps streamline the payment process to provide customers with greater flexibility and convenience, aligning with the District’s commitment to deliver efficient and effective municipal services for residents and businesses.

Key points:
- Customers may now make online payments to a maximum of $25,0000 for Planning, Building, Engineering services that have associated fees attached to it, including Cemetery and Public Works (bulk water payments).
- To make online payments for Building, Planning, and Engineering services, customers will need to email the relevant department and obtain a folder or account number with an access code.
- Development and Building deposits and securities as well as Community Amenity Contributions are not included in the new service.
- Bylaw tickets, Dog Licences, and Business Licences remain at a maximum of $2,000 for credit card payments and do not incur a surcharge.
- The District of Squamish does not accept credit card payments for Taxes and Utilities.
- This change is governed by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, which allows municipalities to apply a surcharge as long as it is not higher than the actual cost to accept the credit card.
