The Squamish2040 Official Community Plan (OCP) is the overarching vision and guiding document for the future of Squamish. It provides direction for change and development in the community over time.
The current OCP was adopted on June 5, 2018 following more than 24 months of visioning, review and extensive public engagement with hundreds of Squamish residents aged 8 to 80.
The all-encompassing document organizes policies under five main goals:
The OCP guides decision-making for current and future Councils, as well as provides guidance for staff, on every aspect of community including growth management, housing, land use, environment, economic development, food systems and arts, culture & heritage.

Provincial legislation defines an OCP as a statement of objectives and policies to guide decisions on planning and land use management, within the area covered by the plan, respecting the purposes of local government. It must consider anticipated housing needs, schools, service requirements, public facilities, location and requirements for commercial, industrial, agricultural and other land uses, and restrictions on lands that are environmentally sensitive or hazardous. The Squamish2040 OCP is a guide used by Council and District staff for decision making on planning and land management issues. It provides direction related to elements such as the location and type of residential, commercial and industrial development; the availability of transportation choices and utility servicing; and environmental, social and economic issues.
The current OCP was adopted on June 5, 2018 (read the Report to Council). The Official Community Plan bylaw and land use schedules are available on the District's Civic Web site.
