Join MP John Weston for National Health & Fitness Day this Saturday in Squamish

Squamish is joining in the celebrations for National Health & Fitness Day (NHFD) this Saturday, June 7, 2014 and encourages residents to get involved. MP John Weston and District of Squamish Acting Mayor Doug Race will host a walk in Squamish, beginning at Brennan Park Recreation Centre at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday. All are welcome!

“Squamish is leading the world in terms of the fitness level of its residents,” said MP John Weston. “Their outstanding community leaders and Council are working hard to serve the constituents of the “Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada.” Squamish was one of the first communities in Canada to proclaim National Health and Fitness Day. I look forward to being in Squamish on the next NHFD, this Saturday, June 7.”

The walk with MP Weston and Acting Mayor Race will follow the Corridor Trail from Brennan Park Recreation Centre and will finish at the Adventure Centre. The public is invited to attend and join the walk. Brennan Park Recreation Centre is also hosting a toonie swim on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

With lots of sunshine in the forecast, there is no shortage of fitness options to engage in for both Squamtonians and visitors. Chances are the ocean, rivers, granite and forest trails will be full of kiteboarders, climbers, kayakers, mountain bikers and hikers getting their regular fitness fix.

“With a never-ending list of recreational activities to choose from to stay fit in this town, it’s no wonder that Squamish residents take health and fitness seriously,” says Acting Mayor Doug Race. “We are very pleased to proclaim Saturday National Health & Fitness Day in Squamish, and look forward to MP Weston joining us to help celebrate.”

About National Health & Fitness Day

National Health and Fitness Day spring-boarded off the Vancouver 2010 Olympics as a project to capture the spirit of the Games and create a legacy of improved health for all Canadians.

MP John Weston initiated the project by working through his colleagues in the House of Commons in the fall of 2012; by 2013, Senator Nancy Greene Raine also began to involve the 100 Canadian Senators. These legislators are encouraged to use their contacts and influence with local mayors and councillors of cities and towns across the country to proclaim Canada’s National Health and Fitness Day on the first Saturday in June and to  “mark” the day in some way.
