2024 BC Building Code Update Bulletin

The Building and Safety Standards Branch of B.C. have released an information bulletin regarding application deadlines and the implementation of 2024 BC Building Code on seismic and adaptable dwelling unit provisions.

Previously, all projects with building permits applied for on or after March 10, 2025, would need to comply with the entirety of the BC Building Code 2024. These updates provide an opportunity for extensions on the seismic and adaptable dwelling unit requirements under the 2024 BC Building Code for certain applications.

Key bulletin highlights:

• Projects that are subject to development permit applications have a new option to extend the application cutoff to March 8, 2027, for the seismic and adaptable dwelling unit requirements in the BC Building Code 2018 provided certain criteria is met.
• Projects that are subject to a rezoning application have a new option to extend the application cutoff to March 8, 2027, for seismic and adaptable dwelling unit requirements in the BC Building Code 2018 provided certain criteria is met.
• Projects for which drawings were prepared before March 8, 2024, have a new option to extend the application cutoff to March 8, 2027, for seismic and adaptable dwelling unit requirements in the BC Building Code 2018 provided certain criteria is met.
